Abstract

Modern Sephardic literature is largely distinguished by its translations and

adaptations of Western and Hebrew novels. Within this framework, we also find works that

depict the customs and ways of life of Ashkenazi Jews. One such example is Kazamyentos

Embrolyados, a short story of about fifteen pages, printed in Rashi script and published in

Jerusalem in 5662 (1901-1902). On the title page appears the note: “kuento trezladado del

ebreo por Shelomo Israel Sherezli”, attributing the translation to this renowned Jerusalemite

author, translator, bookseller, and publisher. The aim of this publication is to add another

text to the corpus of modern Sephardic literature that various scholars have been

consolidating in recent years, with the intention that it may serve as a foundation for future

comparative, linguistic, and literary studies.
