Yehudah ha-Levi: his life in verse

Abstract

In this article I intend to present the life of the Spanish-Hebrew poet Yehudá Haleví through his verses in an attempt to show how the poet lived the vicissitudes of his existence. For the exposition of his life, I make use of Hayim Schirmann's extensive study and the poetic fragments, which I translate from Hebrew, I have taken them from the versions edited by Schirmann and by Brody. For my exposition I divide the life into the following stages: 1) Youth, illustrated with six poems; 2) Maturity, illustrated with four poems; and 3) Uprooting, illustrated with three poems.
